Brewery Ringing Group is an off-shoot of the larger University of East Anglia Ringing Group (UEA RG). We are named after Brewery Farm in Little Stonham in mid-Suffolk which is our main base of operations.

Group Aims

Our group aims are as follows:

  • To systematically collect demographic data through bird ringing and nest recording on all the species that use the farmland, with particular emphasis on those that are classed as “Red Data”
  • To work as part of the larger UEA Ringing Group, that are also ringing lowland farm birds in other locations across East Anglia
  • Provide opportunities for UEA Students to conduct research projects
  • To train and assess bird ringers in lowland farm birds
  • To work with the BTO and other conservation organisations
  • Where possible to provide educational opportunities to the farming community and the wider public
  • Record and monitor other flora and fauna

Ringing Training

COVID 19 – At the moment Bird Ringing is subject to the rules on COVID laid down by the BTO from Natural England and the JNCC. This means training can only be done in small socially distanced groups. Therefore, at the moment, it is not possible to take trainees on. There are currently two trainees in addition to visiting UEA ringing group members. If you are interested in bird ringing and are looking for a trainer please visit this BTO Ringing Page

However, if you would like to visit us for a permit assessment or you are already a trainee/C ringer requiring additional experience in general lowland farm bird ringing, please contact James – birds@breweryringing.uk for information.

In the interests of transparency:

  • All permit holders must send a copy of their ringing permit to birds@breweryringing.uk before attending.
  • That ringers looking for an upgrade or assessment send the full paperwork, including their trainers reference at least 14 days in advance. This must include full details of previous assessments for an upgrade that may have been unsuccessful.
  • To follow all site and ringing group risk assessments. No under 18s without parental supervision.
  • To understand that there might be a small charge to cover rings and equipment. This will be mutually agreed in advance.
  • That all ringers follow BTO and ringing group protocols.
  • That it is a working farm and that ringing operations have to fit around the work of the farm and that access is granted at the landowners discretion.
